School counseling services are available to all students at Silverbrook. The main components of the counseling program are Classroom Lessons, Small Group Counseling, Individual Counseling, and supporting Academic Success for all students. Learn about these options below.
All students participate in monthly Counselor Connection Lessons that are delivered in the classroom. These lessons are intended to support and complement the efforts of parents and the classroom teacher.
The primary goal of Counselor Connection is to provide information, teach skills, and prevent problems before they begin. The objectives of these lessons align with the national standards of the American School Counselor Association. We focus on the following themes:
- Academic Success & personal goal setting
- Healthy Behaviors & Coping strategies
- Relationships & Respect
- Careers
Counseling is available to students on a short term or intermittent basis. Referral for counseling may be done by the parent, the teacher, or the student. Counselors can provide referrals for professional counseling or therapy resources if students need ongoing, long-term support.
At various times during the year support groups, or small group counseling opportunities are offered to students with common needs or concerns. Support groups are small with 6-8 students per group. These groups generally last six weeks.
Counselors meet bi-weekly with house teams to discuss student concerns and set plans for academic achievement. These concerns can range from social/emotional concerns, academic needs, or attendance problems.
