Why Volunteer?
Getting involved in your community helps you grow as a person and makes a difference! Plus, volunteering looks great on your resume, college applications, and scholarship applications.

  • Not required, but encouraged

  • Volunteer 100+ hours in high school → noted on your transcript & in the graduation program


Guidelines & Suggestions

Choose volunteer experiences that:

  • Help better your community

  • Support nonprofit organizations

Ways to earn hours:

  • NHS, Key Club, SEED, Interact, or other service clubs

  • Sports team managers

  • Volunteering for a teacher during off hours

  • Participating in food/clothing drives (donations only don’t count)

  • Camp counselor or mission trip participation (max 8 hours/day)

Planning on a LOT of hours for one organization?

  • If 20+ hours, get prior approval before you start


 Ideas to Get Started

  • Volunteer with United Way or other philanthropic organizations

  • Build with Habitat for Humanity

  • Tutor or coach younger students

  • Volunteer at the West Bend Library

  • Play games at a senior center

  • Check out the Volunteer Center of Washington County for more ideas

  • Silverbrook Camps → max 6 hours/day


 What Does Not Count

  • Service with a material or monetary reward

  • Activities that advance/inhibit religion

  • Court-referred community service

  • Fundraising for school clubs, sports, or other organizations (like a food stand for baseball)

  • Working for a profit-making business

  • Helping family/friends in usual household roles (babysitting siblings, chores, yard work)

  • Travel time to/from the activity

  • Animal sitting

  • Hours before the last day of 8th grade

  • Organizations with a political affiliation
