WBHS students had a unique opportunity earlier this week to experience living history in the Day of Hope and Remembrance event. Four Holocaust survivors shared their personal testimony of survival with students in several social studies and World Language classes.  Learn more about the Day of Hope and Remembrance and read the short biographies of each of the participating survivors: Susie Fono, Albert Beder, Howard Melton, and Edie Shafer.

The last day of school for students in the West Bend School District will be Thursday, June 2, 2016. This is a regular, full-day schedule for K-7. The last day of school for students in eighth-grade is June 1, 2016. The last day of school for students in Early Childhood and Early Childhood Playgroup will be Friday, May 27. Students in Early Childhood Phonology and Head Start will attend school through June 2.  High school students will have final exams on May 31 (periods 1, 2 &3), June 1 (periods 4 &5), and June 2 (periods 6 & 7). 

The West Bend School District is committed to the safety and education of all of our students. Thank you for your understanding and patience while the police investigated a bomb threat which was found yesterday at the end of the school day at the high schools. As always, we take any threat to the safety of our students and staff seriously.

The West Bend Police Department and high school administration continued the investigation throughout the night on Monday. At no time was there a threat to student safety. Details of the incident were shared with parents, as directed by the West Bend Police Department. We worked closely with the police department to ensure the safety of all students, and staff, and to ensure the integrity of the investigation. Chief of Police, Ken Meuler, assured us there would be additional officers assigned to the high schools throughout the night on Monday, and during the school day on Tuesday, until this matter was cleared.

The West Bend School District was notified of a national recall of 4.5 million pounds of fully cooked chicken products from Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., a Waco, Texas establishment, and immediately pulled inventory associated with the recall.  The WBSD is working with a different manufacturer and making menu substitutions if need be to ensure that any products that remain on the menu are safe and not included in the recall. The chicken products were produced on various dates from August. 21, 2014, to March 1, 2016.

Grad Grams are a personalized way to inspire, congratulate, and celebrate graduates of West Bend East and West High Schools. Each GRAD GRAM is like a greeting card that includes a personalized message, decorated if you wish, and returned to any school in the district. The collected pages are assembled into personalized booklets that are given to each graduating senior in their home base prior to the graduation ceremony. Grad Grams cost two for $1. All the money raised from the sale of Grad Grams will benefit the Compass Program at West Bend East & West High Schools, which is designed to proactively provide positive behavioral interventions and supports for students.  Visit the GRAD GRAMS WEBPAGE for more information.

Paul DeLain, a West High School science teacher, was selected as Formal Educator of the Year by the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education for his outstanding and ongoing efforts to infuse environmental education into teaching. Mr. DeLain will be honored at a reception on Saturday, April 30 at Riveredge Nature Center along with other state award winners.

Tickets are available at the WBHS bookkeeper’s office or at the door and cost $10/adult; $8/student; $6/senior; and $3 for children five years of age and under. 

The Parent & Child Development classes at East and West High Schools are looking for preschool children to help with its end-of-course project, Spartan Sun Playschool, where students plan, teach, and observe children in a preschool setting.  If your preschool-aged child is interested in participating, please complete the REGISTRATION FORM before April 29, 2016.

Children will attend one of the sessions listed below.  Sessions are held at the high schools in room P25A from 7:30 a.m. – 8:55 a.m.

• Children must be 3-5 years old (exceptions can be made depending on circumstances)
• Children are not allowed to participate if they have had a fever or contagious illness within 24 hours of a playschool day.
• Due to the facilities available, enrollment will be limited to 20 students.  Registration is on a first come—first serve basis.
• For safety and sanitation reasons, all participating children must be toilet trained.        
• The school district is not responsible for transportation.  Children must leave the building after playschool and are not allowed to attend other classes with high school students.  

Congratulations to Bill Beilfuss, WBSD school nutrition delivery truck driver, for being selected for one of the Support Employee of the Year awards.  Bill’s commitment to the school nutrition department is extraordinary. He believes school lunch plays an important role in student success.  Bill has been with the WBSD for 13 years.
