After passage of a new Wisconsin law that requires schools to implement the science of reading within their literacy curriculum and teaching strategies for grades K-3, a team of West Bend School District teachers, literacy specialists, elementary principals, and administrators was established. The District Literacy Team worked for seven months using a strategic approach to ensure the best outcomes are possible for students as they learn and become proficient readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.

At the Curriculum Committee meeting on March 19, the Curriculum and Instruction Department described the detailed work of the District Literacy Team and additional teachers regarding primary resource review and mandatory training for teachers and school leaders. The District Literacy Team’s main goal was to review potential new primary literacy resources for quality and effectiveness. They used professional resources and a state-provided checklist in their extensive analysis.

The team is recommending Amplify CKLA for consideration, which received the highest scores from our staff in the areas of student engagement, implementation, ease-of-use, and data and resource quality for students in grades K-4. This resource will be available for community review and feedback at the locations and dates below.
