Jason Wiedmeyer - West Bend East Class of 1997
While attending West Bend East High School from 1994-1997, Jason Wiedmeyer earned 11 varsity letters in four sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track.
Wiedmeyer’s talents were well documented in football where he played on offense (quarterback) and defense. In basketball, he earned first-team All Washington County his senior year. But it was in baseball where Wiedmeyer really made his mark. He was first team All-Conference for two years and in 1997 he was Conference Player of the Year, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Player of the Year, and First Team All-State.
He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1997, but attended Triton Junior College in Illinois on a baseball scholarship. He then moved on to the University of Memphis for two years where he was Conference USA Player of the Week in April 2000. Wiedmeyer was drafted in the sixth round of the MLB draft in 2001 by the San Diego Padres and played in High A from 2001-2006.
Jim Sachse - Coach for West Bend East and West
Coach Jim Sachse’s 47-year coaching career was preceded by his own swimming career on the West Bend High School Boys’ Swim Team where he was the captain in 1969.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974, Sachse joined the West Bend School District staff as a physical education teacher and became the assistant coach for the East Boys’ Swim Team in 1975 and the head coach in 1978. Sachse was head coach of the East Girls’ Swim & Dive Team for 16 years and assistant coach for the combined schools’ team for nine years.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974, Sachse joined the West Bend School District staff as a physical education teacher and became the assistant coach for the East Boys’ Swim Team in 1975 and the head coach in 1978. Sachse was head coach of the East Girls’ Swim & Dive Team for 16 years and assistant coach for the combined schools’ team for nine years. Sachse will begin his 44th year as the head coach of the West Bend Boys’ Swim & Dive Team this winter. The team has won 15 conference championships and celebrated 47 conference champion swimmers and divers. Swimmers and divers on his team have qualified for the WIAA State Championships in 38 different years. In total, the team has had 191 qualifiers and 10 state champions.
Kyle Butters - Head Athletic Trainer for West Bend East and West
Kyle Butters has been the head athletic trainer for West Bend East and West School High Schools for 22 years. In 2000, Butters began a Student Athletic Training mentoring program with both high school and college interns, many of which are healthcare professionals today. He started a comprehensive Performance Enhancement program in 2001, which was used by both the high schools and Badger Middle School during the summer months and now has been transitioned into a summer school class that services more than 150 student athletes annually. Butters is the coordinator of athletic training services through Aurora Sports Health while he also mentors other staff, helps to develop policies and protocols, and manages the athletic training services of 14 schools/clubs in Washington and Ozaukee counties.
He has participated in numerous research studies that have helped the advancement of the field. In 2018, under his supervision, the WBHS and its athletic training staff was recognized by the National Athletic Training Association with the Safe Sports School Service award. And in 2019, in conjunction with ASH, Butters was instrumental in the development of a new state-of-the-art athletic training facility located in WBHS that is accessible to all athletes and school district staff for injury assessment and management.
Bill Albrecht - West Bend West Class of 1983
Bill Albrecht has been a student-athlete, teacher, and coach at West High School. As an athlete at West High School from 1980-83, Albrecht earned eight varsity letters in three sports. He qualified for the WIAA State Championships in baseball and golf. On the basketball court, he still holds six school records, including scoring the most points in one game: 42.
As a baseball coach for West, Albrecht is one of the most accomplished coaches in state history. His teams won eight conference championships and qualified for the state
championships nine times, moving on to the championship game five times. In 2007, the baseball team had a 34-1 record and won the state championship. In 2017, his team was undefeated with a 33-0 record and won the state championship for a second time. Albrecht retired from coaching baseball with a 451-113 record and a winning percentage of 80—the highest winning percentage in state history. He continues to coach boys basketball and boys and girls golf at West and will be inducted into the state of Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame this year.
Boyd Janto - West Bend West Class of 1986
(Janto was out of town this weekend and will be honored in person during the basketball season)
Upon graduation from West High School in 1986, Boy Janto had earned 11 varsity letters in four sports and the Andy Pick Outstanding Senior Athlete Award. Janto excelled in cross country and track, finishing second in the conference meet and 20th at the WIAA State Championships his senior year. He also finished his track career with several school records. Janto attended UW-Whitewater where he earned eight letters in track and cross country. He was named all-conference three times and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships twice. He was also named an Academic All-American in 1989.
Janto took over the boys cross country program at West and led them to three conference titles in his first four years of coaching. In 1993, his team won the Division 1 WIAA State Cross Country Championship and he was awarded the State of Wisconsin Cross Country Coach of the Year award by his peers. Janto also coached distance runners for the West track team. After his career took him out of town for several years, Janto returned to West Bend and took the helm of the West Girls Cross Country Team. In nine seasons, his teams won three conference titles and earned six trips to the WIAA State Cross Country Meet. He also coached numerous individual conference champions and state qualifiers in track. Janto co-founded the Spartan Running Club and his family sponsors two Scholar-Athlete Scholarships for graduating seniors each year.
